other interests ...
family: we have 3 kids, lots to enjoy, lots to do, often theres no time for anything else !
amateur radio: i've been licensed now for approximately 15 years, with what was called originally a limited licence
until the powers that be saw the light and the wia was dragged kicking and screaming out of the dark ages.
sure, i like morse code, like lots of other things the belong in museums :-) seriously though, morse is a
useful and handy skill im sure, but requiring it is anachronistic. my initial interest in radio was hf, back
in the days when my om was active, this gave way to cb then digital modes when i became licensed. now that
hf has been opened up to non-morse operators my interest has been rekindled in that area ...
horseriding: so now you think i'm a hypocrite after what i said about morse, i dont care. i ride a clydesdale
when i have the time, which hasnt been for a while now, but when things settle down at the new place we'll
be out to see some trails.
computing: unix/networks/etc - tru64, linux, solaris, hp/ux, cisco, windows when i have no other choice. its how i've made
a living since the days when pdp-11's were the greatest thing and rsts/e meant something to people. since the old days of basic+, vt52's and bundles of telephone wire too heavy to lift, my experience has taken in such things as vax/axp-vms, and some more obscure operating systems like dynix/ptx, xenix and a number of platform specific operating systems and dedicated systems. i've been involved with networking for some time, from the days of stat mux's like the micom 800 series and scitec npx and mdx, through to the beginnings of real networks such as cisco ags, digital network products and more recently cabletron/riverstone switchrouters (argh!) everything cisco (cs/pix/8xx/1xxx/25xx/26xx/36xx/65xx/76xx) and interesting stuff like content switching (l4-7). these days i try and limit time spent playing on machines and spend time on more real-world activities ...
fire fighting: a great way to learn new skills, meet people and give something back to the community. theres a firefighting link on the menu bar that details my own interests as well as a link to my current brigade, gembrook cfa, and my old brigade in south australia, gumeracha cfs.
