about woftam ...
woftam.org is a personal mail and web server run for the purposes of experimentation and to support my professional interests and professional development. the server provides mail (smtp and imap), web services (apache2) and various other services.
as of thursday 28-dec-2006, the server configuration was as follows:
- debian gnu/linux 'testing', usually updated daily
- linux kernel 2.6.18
- apache 2.2.3 etc
- pentium 366, 256mb ram (so it's a little slow ...)
- a few hundred gb of storage allocated all over the place ...
- (all subject to change ... debian 'testing' is like that ...)
woftam can be accessed using ssl - bear in mind however that the certificate is self signed, so your browser will complain the first time you try it and you'll need to add the certificate to your trusted list if you want it to stop complaining each time you visit. note that i am using ssl to improve the security a little on the data in transit, not to prove identity or site validity, so dont expect the woftam.org credentials to be authoritative in terms of identity. having said that, i'm happy to prove who is behind woftam.org should the need arise.
woftam ? well, acronyms often have many meanings, especially these days. woftam's original meaning was 'waste of flaming time and money' but some people have suggested more colourful interpretations. imagine my surprise ... why woftam ? again, there are so many registered names out there that one wonders of the relevance sometimes. of course many people have quite appropriate business names reflected in their domain names and thats fine, but this site isnt here to promote a business, its original intent was to provide a personal learning platform for the various technologies that go behind a website (network, os, dns, server, apps, site design, etc etc) as well as providing a portable email platform all to support my professional interests.
"... there is nothing useful here, what did you expect ?" was the banner of the original site from the time woftam.org was initially set up. when you arrived at the site, generally the only thing you could guarantee was that something different would appear depending on what i was testing at the time, hence the banner. of course i'd like to think that these days that isnt true, but i'm sure you'll be the judge on that ...
this site, woftam.org (note .org) is not afilliated with *any* other sites that use the name woftam. please bear this in mind if you stumble across sites that have similar names but *dramatically* different content.
